Liposuction is the most common aesthetic procedure performed worldwide and in India as well. The popularity of liposuction in India is on the rise because of many factors, importantly peer pressure to look good, increasing lifestyle problems and improved safety and outcomes from the procedure.

When someone says you have put on weight, he or she does not weigh you ; ut looks at your size or inches. Liposuction helps you get rid of these inches. At Lasercosmesis, comprehensive care program is launched to get you back in shape by loosing those stubborn blobs of fat, that do not respond to dieting and exercise.

Certain fat deposits are more difficult to get rid of than others. This is because our body has tendency to store fat in certain areas – abdomen, hips and thighs for a woman (pear shape) while for a man it is abdomen (apple). Our body holds on to fat in these areas making it tough to lose inches there. Even if you lose weight and become thinner, the body proportion may not change in these areas and the bulges continue to be bothersome. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from these areas and the body is sculpted back into shape.

Liposuction is not meant for weight loss. Some weight loss will occur from the fat removal, but that is not the primary aim of the surgery.

DIET—There are many fad diets and supplements meant for weight loss. It is difficult to stick to them forever even if they partly help you lose weight. Diet program at Lasercosmesis is called EAT SMART DIET. We teach you how, when and most importantly why to eat. Please remember that you must follow healthy diet even after liposuction to maintain the results. It is true that fat usually will not appear at liposuctioned areas again, but there are other storehouses where fat will be deposited if you do not cut down on calories.

Exercise—it is essential to spent the calories that you have eaten in order to stop them getting deposited in the body. So you must exercise without causing damage to your joints. Walking, swimming , cycling are the best exercises for overweight patients, as they do not strain the knee joints. A daily routine of fast walking, avoiding lifts and autos when you can and yes—fidgeting can help you lose calories.

At Lasercosmesis we evaluate you first medically, teach you how to eat smart, counsel you for appropriate exercise suitable for you. Then we discuss various options of fat loss for you and get some blood tests done. The tests help us confirm that there is no illness like thyroid or diabetes that is causing weight gain.

Then we organise a special sonography called abdominal fat mapping specially designed by doctors at Lasercosmesis. This sonography helps us know exactly where you have accumulated fat. If there is too much fat inside abdomen—around liver, kidneys, and intestines, liposuction will not help you. You need to take medicine or if you are too overweight, you may opt for bariatric surgery.

If you can go for liposuction, we counsel you again thoroughly about liposuction.

A stretchable pressure garment similar to a corset is ordered after proper measurements.

One week before surgery you need to bathe with a special soap.

We prefer that you show to our experienced physician and get a fitness for surgery certificate to be on safer side.

Liposuction techniques:

Traditional and time tested method of liposuction. Finer canulas and better techniques have resulted in vastly improved results. SAL is the gold standard in liposuction techniques even now.

We use power assisted liposuction machine and a very powerful indigenous suction machine attached to it. Our American machine vibrates at very high speed to nebulise the fat which is then taken out with suction machine.

Fine cannulas are used to make skin shrink. This prevents sagging of skin afterwards.

Most liposuctions at our centre are performed under spinal and epidural anesthesia. Liposuction, especially small volume can be performed under I.V sedation and local anesthesia too.

Tumescent and super wet techniques are used depending on the volume of aspirate expected. Tiny access points (2-3 mm) are made in natural creases or within bikini line through which the wetting solution is infiltrated. The fat is then aspirated using a fine canulas and smooth controlled action. The commonly treated areas are – abdomen, hips, thighs, love handles, saddle bags, inner thighs, buttocks, upper and lower back and the arms. The underchin area and the jaw line are commonly addressed on the face. The amount of fat removed will depend on the areas addressed and the volume of fat deposited. Upto 10 % of body weight equivalent fat can be removed at a time. Your surgeon will decide how much fat can be removed safely. The access points are closed with one stitch as thin as hair. Stitches are removed on the 15 th day if they don’t fall of on their own. The stitching prevents watery—bloody discharge that otherwise would spoil your clothes.

A custom made pressure garment/corset (made of Lycra and cotton) will be put on immediately after the surgery. The garment is to be worn for a month after surgery, 24 hours a day. The corset is not to be removed for the first 4 days. Post-surgery sequels include swelling, bruising and bearable discomfort. These are temporary and should disappear over a few weeks. You can return to work in 3-4 days and can start heavy physical activity in 4 weeks.

Seroma, pigmentation, minor irregularities, and temporary loss of sensation, blood clots and skin ulcerations have been reported. Major complications like fluid overload, embolism and shock are rare when safety regulations are adhered to. Basically liposuction is an inch loss surgery. Lasercosmesis has a nice presentation on this concept from 2010.

Liposuction is used to get rid of isolated areas of fat which are diet and/or exercise resistant. Weight loss is achieved as the fat removed does have mass. In some cases of stubborn weight, we can do liposuction which improves your shape and imbalance in posture so you can then exercise and lose weight afterwards. This is at discretion of doctors.

Most of our patients find that walking helps decrease the swelling after liposuction surgery.

If after liposuction surgery one does not eat healthy and exercise regularly, the fat cells that remain in the treated area can swell. The fat cells that have been removed are gone forever. Liposuction is not meant to be used as a weight loss program.
