Botox

Face skin has many muscles attached to it. We are able to move our skin and features to express many emotions with them. Over years, the muscles cause wrinkles and lines to appear on face due to years of repetition. If these muscles are slightly weaker, they can pull the skin less harder and the wrinkles disappear.

Botox is a toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum and is used as a relaxant of the muscles of expression. This weakens the fine muscles in the forehead, around the eyes and the glabellar areas as a result frown lines, forehead creases and crows feet are reduced or eliminated. This is approved in correct dosage by American FDA.

Botox is also being used to reduce sweating in the scalp, axilla, palms of hand and feet. Treatment is in the form of multiple injections made using very fine needles with ice or local anesthetic cream to numb the area. The injections are not painful. One week is the optimum time to see the best results. They generally last about 6—8 months and then the injection has to be repeated. The injections done multiple times may give a longer lasting result or effect may reduce. You can stop taking the injection without any problem. The original condition then returns but it is not worse that it was.

For many years Botox has been used in the treatment of patients who have spasmodic contractions of the eye or other facial muscles in conditions such as common ticks—-hemi-facial spasm or blepharospasm, as well as certain spasmodic voice disorders.

Botox injections appear to be very safe. If qualified doctor gives injection after thorough assessment, the chances of unwanted effects are very few. The most serious side effect is drooping of the upper lid due to paralysis of the lid muscle or double vision caused by paralysis of small muscles of the eye. This complication is temporary and will disappear once the effect of botox wears off. No systemic side effect has been reported to date in the dose that is recommended for face.

There are 43 muscles in your face and it’s vital that the person who performs botulinum toxin injections understands and pinpoints the correct spots to optimize your treatment.

A very thin needle is used to inject small amounts of botox into specific muscles. By carefully choosing specific muscles, your healthcare provider weakens only the wrinkle-producing muscles, preserving your natural facial expressions.

Botox treatment injections usually take less than 15 minutes. The number of injections you need will depend on multiple factors, including your facial features and the extent of your wrinkles. Crow’s feet, for example, usually demand two to three injections. Furrows above your brow could take five or more.

No anesthesia is required. But if you wish a surface anaesthetic ream can be used, apart from local ice compress to numb the skin. There is hardly any down time or recovery time.

You may notice results within a few days, but it can take up to a week to see the full effect. This improvement typically lasts about three to four months. When the effects of botulinum toxin begin to fade, your muscle reactions and the wrinkles will return.

QUESTIONS

DO I NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR BEFORE I CAN GET BOTOX?

Yes. The doctor must meet with patients face to face before. This is to make sure they fully understand the patient’s medical history and reasons for wanting the treatment. The doctor can then plan the session by studying your expressions, understand your expectations and treat accordingly.

WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO MAKE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with botox will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS FROM A BOTOX COSMETIC TREATMENT?

Within days, you may see a marked improvement in the moderate-to-severe frown lines between your brows. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days, and results can last for up to 6 to 8 months. Individual results may vary.

DO TREATMENT RESULTS DIFFER?

Yes, individual results may vary. To get the best results, it’s important to go to a doctor who is experienced in administering BOTOX
